Hi, we are a group of very nice people who are committed to evidence-based, compassionate, FUN toilet learning!

Dr. Katie Rinald is passionate about toilet learning! She is a renowned expert and sought-after speaker on toileting instruction. She has consulted with families, schools, and community groups all over the world on challenging toileting issues. Currently, Dr. Rinald is focused on overseeing and supporting the work of the Blackbird team.

Dr. Rinald has completed research on teaching parents to implement toleting with their children as part of her graduate studies at UBC. She has worked with children with developmental disabilities since 2000 and has focused on toileting since 2010. She’s the author of The Autism Potty Training Parent Handbook.

Katie Rinald, PhD, BCBA

Paige has a Master’s degree in education with a specialization in behaviour analysis from the University of Western Ontario and is a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst. Paige has significant toileting experience; she has worked with children and teens with a wide variety of toileting challenges since 2016 with great success. Paige is committed to working with families to meet them where they are and develop plans and systems that really fit.

Paige is based in Nanaimo, B.C., and oversees all of Blackbird’s toileting work in the Vancouver Island region. She also provides distance consulting via Zoom to families and schools all over the world.

Shawna Bozman

With a background as an inclusive preschool teacher, Shawna loves working with children. Shawna was the first toileting therapist to join our team in 2017, and has worked with hundreds of learners to meet their toileting goals. She has endless energy and an undeniable knack for making toilet learning fun!

Shawna is based in Chilliwack and works in toileting programs in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland area. Currently, she works as a senior toileting therapist, providing ongoing communication and support to families working on toileting with their children.

Jinny Hong

Jinny is a senior toileting therapist who joined our team in 2021, after working for many years as a behavioural interventionist with young children with ASD. She works directly with learners in their homes, schools and community organizations in the Metro Vancouver area. Jinny also provides ongoing communication and support to those implementing toileting programs. She is extremely skilled at troubleshooting challenges and working out individualized solutions. Families who work with Jinny have commented that it’s clear how much she cares.

Jinny holds a Bachelors’ degree in Applied Behaviour Analysis from Capilano University and is currently pursuing graduate studies in behaviour analysis.

 

Shelby Mercer

Working under the supervision of Paige Nadeau, BCBA, Shelby is the main therapist in our Vancouver Island toileting programs, and also travels to the homes of families around B.C. to assist with toileting challenges.

Shelby is especially skilled at bonding quickly with learners and helping them excited about the toilet learning process. Parents she works with often report that Shelby really helps them feel confident and at ease about supporting their children with acquiring toileting skills.

Lizz Crawford

Lizz joined the Blackbird team in 2020 and currently works as a senior toileting therapist in toilet learning programs. She is based in the Fraser Valley and also travels to the homes of families all over B.C. to implement toileting programs. Families she has worked with report that Lizz is knowledgeable, kind, and lots of fun!

Lizz has many years of experience with children with ASD as an educational assistant in schools, a behavioural interventionist, and a junior consultant.

Note: Lizz is currently on parental leave.

 

Christina Cummins

Christina is a toileting therapist on our Lower Mainland B.C. teams. She also travels to work with clients around B.C.

Christina worked for many years as an Early Childhood Educator before joining our team in 2023. She also has experience working in early intervention for young children diagnosed with ASD. Christina is really skilled at helping children (and parents!) feel comfortable and supported in their toileting programs. She’s excellent at meeting learners where they are and making the toilet learning process engaging and fun.
